The baby hyena, also known as the spotted hyena, rock hyena, or laughing hyena (though not to be confused with its closest relative, the brown hyena), are a species of hyenas found in Sub-Saharan Africa, primarily south of the Sahara Desert and in southern Africa. They are known for their high-pitched laughs, which sound like loud cackling. The baby hyena’s scientific name means dog-hyena because its skull resembles that of the dog more than that of the adults.

The Baby Hyena Species

The baby hyena is a species native to southern Asia. Also known as a spotted hyena, it has spots in various shades of brown or tan, and white fur around its neck and torso. Baby hyenas are born with dark brownish-black fur that lightens to golden tan or yellowish-tan as they age. They’re known for their shrill cries and distinctive laugh that can be heard up to 3 miles away.

Characteristics of the Adult Male

Compared to females, male hyenas are larger, standing 61.5–69 cm (24–27 in) at shoulder height and weighing 21–34 kg (46–75 lb). Males also have thicker necks and a prominent mane. However, it is not uncommon for males to develop small spines on their foreheads similar to those of females.

How do baby hyenas eat?

In nature, female hyenas are larger than males. Males will always have a large amount of belly fat, even as adults. This is due to their inability to lactate (female hyenas produce milk), so they must consume larger portions of food in order to gain enough nutrients for themselves and their cubs. Females do not need extra nutrients since they lactate and breastfeed. When feeding cubs, females will swallow their food whole; then regurgitate it back into the mouths of their offspring.
