An isolated island which is called as the Pollepel Island is situated in the Hudson River in New York. One of the salient feature of this island is an abandoned military surplus warehouse which is known as Bannerman’s Castle. The land area of this island is about 6.5 acres. Bannerman began to build a castle in 1901 to store his surplus munitions cartridges. Most of the parts of the castle given to the stores of army and he began to build another small castle on the top of the island as a residence. However with the death of the Bannerman construction of the castle stopped. Then in August 1920 part of the castle was destroyed because of an explosion. Because of that this island was left. In 1969 a huge fire destroyed the floors and roofs of the castle. Most of the interior parts of the castle have fallen down but some exterior walls are straight. However now this castle is ruined. Currently Pollepel Island is under the supervision of the organization “The Bannerman Castle Trust, Inc.” This organization protect this historical valuable castle for the public and tourists to enjoy as a cultural historic and educational facility.
